Northwest Bookstores Embrace Book-Printing Machines
Three Northwest bookstores are now home to new machines that print books on demand. Using the machines, readers can get copies of long out–of–print books, or publish their own novels or memoirs. The stores are also becoming publishers in their own right, bringing out local histories and other lost treasures. In Seattle's University Bookstore, the staff has nicknamed the book–printing machine Homer. It's partly for the poet and partly for the children's book character Homer Price, who creates a similar machine to make his own donuts.

Refill and reuse empty printer cartridges
In recognition of Earth Day, Cartridge World is reminding those in the local community that saving money and helping the environment is easy when it comes to reusing printer cartridges. A discarded printer cartridge thrown into a landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose and with more than 350 million cartridges thrown out every year in North America alone, it all adds up to mountains of unnecessary waste. Since printers are commonplace in every home office and business, it makes sense to reuse and refill empty ink and toner cartridges – and saves money in the process.

Stratasys Delivers First Shipment of HP-Branded 3D Printers
Product designers, engineers, and architects who design with CAD (computer aided design) use 3D printers as peripheral devices to "print" or produce a tangible 3D model from plastic or other material to verify the form, fit, and function of designs prior to committing them to production or construction. Designers often seek 3D printers that model with production-grade thermoplastic when they want to best-predict performance of their plastic end-product.
Stratasys manufactures 3D printers under the Dimension brand, and it makes 3D production systems under the Fortus brand. Both product lines, as well as the HP-branded 3D printers employ Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology, which creates three-dimensional plastic models directly from a CAD file. The patented process creates parts by extruding semi-molten plastic in thin layers to "grow" the part, layer by layer. The process of producing a part layer-by-layer is known generically as "additive fabrication" or "additive manufacturing."

Xerox's New Multifunction Printer Combines Affordable Color with High-Productivity Workflow Tools
Xerox Corporation's new color and black-and-white multifunction printers (MFPs) offer advanced scanning, document workflow features and security enhancements at an affordable price. Aimed at budget-minded small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs), the Xerox WorkCentre 7120 color MFP prints high-impact color documents, such as presentations and budget charts. The MFP prints color and black-and-white documents at speeds up to 20 pages-per-minute (ppm) using Xerox's Emulsion Aggregate High Gloss (EA-HG) toner, which produces smaller, more consistent toner particles, to create crisp text and sharper color images.
The WorkCentre 7120 is equipped with advanced document management features that add convenience and make office work easier:
-- Document routing to e-mail, network and content management software simultaneously for repeatable workflows
-- Advanced color scanning up to 55 ppm
-- Faxing over IP, fax forward to e-mail and scan to or print from USB
-- Xerox Auditron monitors color printing costs
The MFP also provides opportunities for SMBs to lower their environmental impact:
-- One of the most compact hallway color MFPs
-- Consumes 3.08 watts of power in sleep mode
-- Route and preview incoming documents on the interface or at PC to eliminate needless printing
-- Earth Smart print driver defaults include two-sided printing with no banner pages
In addition, Xerox is updating its line of black-and-white MFPs. The Xerox WorkCentre 5700 Series includes seven new MFPs that handle everything from general office documents to high-volume print jobs. With print speeds up to 90 ppm, the MFPs can:
-- Print, copy, scan or fax without interruption for quick turnarounds
-- Scan documents in color
-- Move to the next job if the first job in queue is held up due to a lack of resources with the Print Around feature
The WorkCentre 5700 Series comes equipped with advanced security features, including full support for the IPv6 network security standard, Image Overwrite to electronically "shred" data, fax isolation to prevent unauthorized access to data and Network Authentication to restrict access to scan, e-mail and network fax features. Recycling printer cartridges in Montreal
In a factory building in an industrial sector of Montreal, an ingenious machine goes about its business, which is dismantling Hewlett-Packard printer cartridges. “Recycling” for these familiar household objects usually means a shredder, which according to HP’s Dean Miller can reduce thousands of cartridges per hour to a somewhat messy mix of plastic, metal and paper particles. "Closed loop" dismantling is the next big innovation in recycling, applicable to many products, from printer cartridges to TV sets and cars, too.

HP Introduces Industry's First "Plug and Print" Laser Printers
HP bolstered the HP LaserJet Pro printer line with a new "plug and print" technology that allows customers to begin printing in as little as two minutes by simply connecting a netbook, notebook or desktop PC to the printer with a USB cable -- no CD required. New monochrome printers featuring HP Smart Install include the HP LaserJet Pro P1100 Printer series -- the most energy-efficient laser printer on the planet(1) -- the HP LaserJet Pro M1130/M1210 Multifunction Printer (MFP) series and the HP LaserJet Pro P1566/P1606dn Printer series. HP also unveiled the HP Scanjet Professional 1000 Mobile Scanner, the company's first portable scanner for fast, on-the-go scanning without the need for batteries or an AC adapter.
The printers feature new HP Auto-On Technology, which intelligently senses activity -- such as when a print job is sent to the printer -- and awakens the device automatically from "off" mode.(2) It complements HP Auto-Off Technology, which automatically adjusts the power settings and turns the printer off when there is no print activity. With HP Auto-On/Auto-Off Technology, the new HP LaserJet P1100 Printer series can save up to 72 percent on energy costs versus its predecessor. The printers also use Original HP LaserJet print cartridges with energy-efficient toner for energy savings of up to 35 percent on every page versus earlier products.(4)

New Xerox Wide Format Device Offers High-Speed Precision Printing
When printing engineering and architectural renderings or schematics, accurate printing can't come at the cost of extra time. Enter Xerox new Xerox Wide Format 6622 Solution that delivers sharp, precise detail printing at high speeds. In addition to serving the needs of graphic communications providers, the wide format black-and-white digital printer, copier and scanner is ideal for reprographic departments within engineering, construction and architecture firms where technical drawings need to be easily accessible and replicated quickly. For example, government offices can use the 6622 Solution to print surveying documents and construction plans, giving home owners and contractors fast access to essential information.
The Xerox Wide Format 6622 Solution prints 22 D/A1 (24" x 36") prints-per-minute and offers crisp 600 x 1800 dpi printing and 600 x 600 dpi scanning options. An on-board color scanner can improve copies of worn originals -- automatic background suppression makes smudges and creases less noticeable and tattered documents easier to read. Scans can be viewed on the color touch screen user interface before being printed, helping to verify quality, avoid mistakes and reduce wasted prints.
The 6622 device is driven by Xerox's FreeFlow Accxes Print Server and can easily be incorporated into existing workflows. FreeFlow Accxes offers color calibration with other network printers, enhanced management of the print queues to easily replicate previous jobs and the capability to seamlessly scan documents to a mailbox on the print server, network FTP location or remote network printer. The FreeFlow Accxes Print Server unifies the print server software across the entire Xerox wide format monochrome portfolio, allowing customers to have a seamless workflow. The Xerox Wide Format 6622 Solution adds to the company's robust line of wide format printers designed for technical printing, which includes the Xerox Wide Format 6604/6605(TM) Solution and the Xerox 6279(TM) Wide Format device.

ZScanner 700 CX Wins 2010 Design News Golden Mousetrap Best Product Award
ZScanner 700 CX has been selected as the 2010 Design News Golden Mousetrap -- Best Product winner in the Rapid Prototyping category. The ZScanner 700 CX is the world's first handheld laser scanner that can capture surface information in full 24-bit color, rendering the complete picture of an object, not just the geometry. Color 3D data enables more realistic and informative 3D visualization and concept models, making the ZScanner 700 CX ideal for cultural heritage, anthropology, archeology, art, entertainment and Web applications, as well as product design and reverse engineering.
In addition to capturing color, the ZScanner 700 CX provides automatic, fully accurate texture mapping. Texture maps can be saved separately from the mesh, meaning users can modify or refine the texture in photo editing software without compromising accuracy. Flexible resolution during scanning enables the user to reduce resolution to obtain a lighter-weight file or smoother surface appearance. Dual scanning mode lets the user toggle between color and monochrome modes during the same scan.
The ZScanner 700 CX color scanner creates the first full-color scan-to-print solution when combined with Z Corporation's 3D printers, which are the only ones capable of printing in multiple colors. ZPrinters create physical models directly from ZScanner data, or any 3D data, just as 2D printers create documents from word processing text.
The ZScanner 700 CX extends the ZScanner 700 platform that in 2006 introduced unprecedented speed, ease-of-use and versatility to 3D scanning. The ZScanner 700 was the first-handheld, self-positioning scanner on the market that could digitize 3D surfaces in real time. It lets users scan any object in the tightest spaces with one continuous scan. Conventional scanners require multiple setups with fixed-position tripods, mechanical arms, or external positioning devices that must be aimed and re-aimed directly at target surfaces. ZScanners also capture information in a single reference model, meaning users do not need to invest time or risk errors in tedious post-processing to stitch multiple scans into one.

Printers in dorms eliminated to go green
In an effort to create more cost-friendly and "green" policies, Residential Services decided it would be in the best interest of the school to eliminate all printers within student residences and Greek houses. "We have found that a majority of our students already have their own printers, which are equipped to meet their needs," according to Ozzie Breiner, director of Residential Services. "We also note that most of the laserjet printers currently provided in the residence facilities are not housed in a climate-controlled environment, and high humidity causes them to jam frequently and break down."

Office Copier Celebrates 50th Birthday
According to CNN the most famous piece of office equipment has turned 50 this year. The office copier is still a prime feature in many offices, whether it is for printing purposes or for a five minute gossip session amongst boisterous employees. However, although the basic uses of the copier have remained, dimensions of the copier have changed. According to a recent article by CNN "offices have replaced traditional copiers with network connected multi-purpose printers." Office furniture is just as important as office equipment although it is not always something people think about improving. As an organisation, you probably replaced your office copier because it was outdated, switched to faster broadband to improve your office connectivity and download speeds, and invested in the latest flat screen monitors to save space and keep your employees happy. However, how many organisations can say they update office furniture for the same reasons - to keep up to date with trends and improve functionality? Today's trends show that pieces of office equipment/technology is becoming smaller in size, but bigger in functionality and capability. Less really is more… So if your employees are still sat at huge office desks surrounded by messy drawer units and unused filing cabinets that barely close, now might be the time to downsize your office furniture and make effective use of space.
