Lexmark's business C734dn quick, but costly
Lexmark's C734dn can cope with a busy office. The base capacity of 650 sheets can be expanded with two further 550-sheet trays and a high-capacity 2000-sheet feeder. There's an integral duplex unit, and you can opt for a special media tray that supports narrow media. OKI Release New LED Printers
Flashing lightbulbs. To date they've been good for transmitting morse code and causing epileptic fits. Recently though the fine people at OKI decided that giving lonely lighthouse keepers something to do wasn't a worthy purpose for the lightbulb. They've therefore integrated LEDs into their new printers, and given them the noble task of generating printouts. Oh what benevolent ink cartridge manufacturers!

Océ makes leap forward to be seen as lean and green
Just under three years ago, Océ developed a strategic alliance with UK-based Shining Earth, part of Delta-Simons consultants, to develop a scheme where the energy consumption from a flagship product, the Océ VarioPrint 6250, was measured over all its key functions and operating modes. From this data, the CO2 released as a consequence of electricity generation was determined over the lifetime of the production press. A shining example of how to offset CO2 to benefit the environment.

Xerox's ColorQube 9200 Series Reduces Waste and Save Customers Money
Xerox Corporation introduced its ColorQube 9200 Series multifunction printer (MFP) with a straightforward proposition -- affordable color that lowers the environmental impact of office printing. One year later, organizations around the world say it's true -- solid ink technology is making a positive impact on business and the environment. Customers using the ColorQube 9200 Series to cut costs and meet their sustainability goals include:
-- CityCenter (U.S.), an urban destination of hotels and residences, spas, dining and shopping on the Las Vegas Strip, recently installed 37 ColorQube 9200 MFPs to help meet sustainability goals. The MFPs generate 90 percent less supplies waste, 9 percent less lifecycle energy and 10 percent fewer greenhouse gases than a comparable laser-based product and are located in every property in the development, including the flagship ARIA Resort & Casino.
CityCenter has achieved six LEED(R) gold certifications by the U.S. Green Building Council. The solid ink MFPs are just one part of its commitment to using sustainable elements and practices to create a healthier environment at CityCenter.
-- The ColorQube 9200 Series is helping businesses in Europe reduce their color printing costs, including Capespan (U.K.), a leading fresh produce company that installed two ColorQube 9200 MFPs at its headquarters earlier this year. The MFPs cut the cost of color pages by up to 62 percent compared to traditional color lasers, without compromising print quality, saving the company thousands of dollars.
Corus Entertainment Inc. (Canada), one of Canada's largest and most-successful media and entertainment companies, has entered into a five-year partnership with Xerox Global Services to run its Corus Print Centre. The deal enabled Corus to replace 240 older print devices with 43 new Xerox machines, including 30 ColorQube 9202 MFPs.
The MFPs will help Corus reduce costs, increase staff productivity and build on the sustainability initiatives associated with the company's new LEED gold-certified headquarters.

Memjet Printers are Here
Memjet printing technology, a distinctly new variation on inkjets, was first unveiled in early 2007 along with some demo videos of spectacularly fast prototype printers. The promise was that Memjet printers could print letter-size output at 60 pages per minute, or one page per second, and 1,600-by-1,600 dots per inch, with printers that were supposed to be available in 2008 for $200 to $300. Really.

Intermec Reduces Deployment Time and Improves Network Connectivity with New PF8 Desktop Printers
Intermec Technologies announced enhancements to its PF8 desktop thermal printers -- including internal Ethernet and Intermec PrintSet configuration support. The new features streamline printer deployment and minimize maintenance for light duty applications in transportation/courier, manufacturing, healthcare, in-store retail and office environments.
"The PF8 chosen by GeoPost, perfectly meets the need to identify express parcels using barcodes, for customers dealing with tens to hundreds of parcels per day," Jean-Luc Defrance, group chief information officer of GeoPost. "The printer is compact and easy to use which makes it the perfect solution for customers dealing with a large volume of express parcels. Its compatibility with the Intermec PC4 printer is a very useful extra function."
Intermec PrintSet provides a simple mechanism for configuring printer and network settings, downloading fonts and graphics and upgrading firmware -- saving time for both set-up and ongoing support. The PF8 printers, available in thermal transfer (PF8t) and direct thermal (PF8d) technology models, include flexible, industry standard connectivity - including parallel, serial, USB and optional internal Ethernet -- enabling easy, drop-in installation in networked environments. With their compact size, common media specifications, and ESIM printer language, the PF8 printers provide an easy migration path from legacy Intermec printers like the PC4, and other desktop printers using the EPL printer language.

Buying ink cartridges is no longer a black-and-white issue
Staff at HP are quick to list interesting facts and figures about the company’s print technology, and they do so with a certain sense of pride. An ink cartridge’s nozzle is one-third of the width of a human hair, for example, and can have up to 36,000 drops of ink passed through it every second. These and many other statistics are used by HP, to some degree at least, to explain the high cost of ink for the consumer. The mantra that “ink is not just coloured water” is stated repeatedly by Geraldine Morel, the company’s European marketing product manager.

Xerox's iGen4 Press Drives Prints and Profits
Hailed as the "ideal press" for producing high-end collateral, direct marketing and photo specialty products, Xerox Corporation (XRX 10.40, +0.10, +0.97%) has added new product enhancements and a customization program to its Xerox iGen4press. The features extend the range of print jobs that generate new business opportunities and profits for print providers.
Print service providers from Maine to Russia rely on Xerox's iGen4 press to expand their digital businesses with direct mail pieces, photo books and specialized calendars. DMM, Inc., a direct marketing solutions provider based in Scarborough, Maine, produced a fundraising campaign for the Biodiversity Institute on its iGen4 press. "Adopt-a-Loon" postcards were designed to raise awareness and drive funding for the institute's environmental efforts - sharp detail and accurate color reproduction were musts to preserve the quality of the wildlife photography.
Green production was essential since the Biodiversity Institute studies the impact of contaminants on the environment. The postcards were printed without chemically processed inks on Forest Stewardship Council certified paper. The campaign resulted in 80 new loon "adoptions" and a 14.4 percent increase in donations over the previous year.
Adlis SAS selected the iGen4 press when it expanded its business to include photo books. The Paris-based digital print company's storefront near the Louvre Museum is the perfect location to showcase its artistic photo books and the image quality made possible with the iGen4 press. Adlis' diverse customer base -- from governments, associations and museums to vacationers, newlyweds and youth groups -- can easily create high-quality photo books by logging on to their website.

Qualifying entries must be submitted between May 5, 2010 and June 4, 2010.
Entrepreneur.com will select the three top submissions, awarding the grand-prize winner with a $10,000 green office makeover (through a Staples gift pack) and a spotlight in an online feature themed "How to Take Your Business Green" in August. The second-place winner will receive a $2,000 Staples gift pack and the third-place winner will receive a $1,000 Staples gift pack. Staples offers a wide selection of eco-conscious products which incorporate various environmental features such as recycled content, environmental certifications or other environmental designs. EcoEasy Tips for Any Office
1. Whether it's reusing old stationery as scratch paper, setting up a recycle bin for cans and water bottles, or separating boxes and newspapers, make sure materials in the office are sorted to be recycled.
2. Set up computers and other energy-draining equipment (i.e. copiers, fax machines) to go on standby to reduce energy consumption. Use ENERGY STAR-certified products, which are 50 percent more energy efficient than a standard unit.
3. Turn off equipment at the end of the day or before the weekend starts and unplug equipment until it is needed since many machines consume energy even in the "off" position.
4. Replace any incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs which last up to 10 times longer.
5. Take your old computers, monitors, laptops, printers, faxes and all-in-ones to any StaplesU.S. store and drop them off at the customer service desk to be recycled properly. All brands are accepted for recycling regardless of where they were purchased. Staples also provides ink and toner cartridge recycling and offers $3 back in Staples Rewards for any ink and toner cartridges returned to stores, up to 10 per month.
6. Save materials and important documents digitally on your computer instead of in file cabinets. When printing, use a printer like one from the Staples HP EcoEasy line of printers which use up to 50 percent less paper with double-sided printing.
7. Makeover your desk with eco-conscious products; in addition to recycled paper, Staples offers a wide selection of eco-conscious products such as bamboo flash drives and remanufactured toner cartridges.
8. Use eco-conscious cleaning products when tidying up the office. Staples' Sustainable Earth(R) cleaning products provide powerful cleaning action and minimize impacts to the environment.
9. Look into furniture and cubicles that are Greenguard Certified (www.greenguard.org). The materials in these products have been tested for toxic emissions. Products that are under the allowable limits of toxins are defined by the U.S. Green Building Council as Greenguard products.
10. Carpool to work; if you and a coworker live by each other, riding to work together will reduce polluting car emissions. If you live close to work, why not walk or ride your bike.

Call for investigation on copy machines
The much-maligned mainstay of the office, the copy machine, could be a jackpot for identity thieves, Representative Edward Markey said in a letter calling on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate possible criminal misuse of the machines’ hard drives. “I am very concerned that these copy machines can be a treasure trove for identity thieves, allowing criminals to easily access highly sensitive personal information,’’ said Markey, a Democrat from Malden who is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
