Penny-Pinching Printers

Printers are money pits: You pay for the machine, and then you keep on paying more for the ink or toner it needs to produce your documents. With some lower-end models, your first set of replacement consumables may cost almost as much as the printer itself. But you don’t have to crack into your 401(k) just to run your printer. You can reduce your printing costs by buying the right printer in the first place—and keeping close watch on your printing habits afterward.

The joint effort targets OEM printer manufacturers by facilitating the licensing and implementation of multi-PDL combinations, including PostScript(R) 3 and PDF solutions from Adobe, and XPS and HP-compatible PCL(R) 5 and PCL 6 solutions developed by Monotype Imaging. The initiative is expected to reinforce the print technology offerings of both companies, and provide printer manufacturers with greater flexibility and choice.
"Our fonts and font technologies are considered standards in the laser printer industry, thanks to the relationships we've built with more than 50 printer OEMs over many years. It's a natural step to align with Adobe, a world leader in printing and imaging technologies, to direct customers toward genuine PostScript and PDF solutions," said Dave McCarthy, vice president and general manager of Monotype Imaging's Printer Imaging group. "OEMs who have licensed PostScript technology from Adobe will also be able to more easily complement their offering with XPS and PCL support, in addition to our fonts, color and printer driver solutions."
Adobe is credited with pioneering device-independent PDLs and imaging technologies. Today, PDF and PostScript remain the industry-leading imaging models for distribution and printing of final form content. "This collaboration will provide printer OEMs with a high performance, scalable PDL platform backed up by best-in-class, local support," said Raman Nagpal, senior director, Print and Scan Business at Adobe. "It will simplify product development and ongoing management for OEM partners, while increasing their available options."

The ART architecture supports the company's UFST(R) (Universal Font Scaling Technology) font rendering subsystem, which complies with industry-standard printing languages to enable high-quality printed output. The imaging model incorporates Monotype Imaging's ColorSet CMM (color management module) to facilitate consistent color mapping between input and output devices. T. A. Grimm & Associates, Inc. today announced the release of a comprehensive benchmark study of seven 3D printers. The benchmark is available in both North American and European editions, and each 60-page report includes more than 100 images, charts and tables. The benchmark measures the performance of Alaris30, Designjet 3D, ProJet SD 3000, SD300 Pro, uPrint, V-Flash and ZPrinter 310 Plus in terms of time, cost and quality. According to Todd Grimm, president, “Our goal is to put real-world data in the hands of those interested in evaluating 3D printers so that they can make informed decisions.” He continued, “In the report, we show which system has an effective material cost of $3.57/cubic inch and which has a cost of $25.05/cubic inch. The investigation also reveals discrepancies in time as large as 17 hours for a single prototype. These are details that are important to prospective users.” To present all aspects of dimensional accuracy, 3D scanning technologies were used to measure the 3D printed parts. High-resolution white light scanners captured up to two and a half million points on each prototype. These dense data sets were then translated into color maps and statistical charts to visually describe part quality.

Is Printer Ink a “Consumer Rip-Off”?

Shopping for replacement ink and toner cartridges can be an “eye opening” experience. Consumers quickly realize that the cost of purchasing a printer is minimal when compared to the cost of operating that printer, particularly the high cost of buying replacement ink and toner cartridges. It is not uncommon to find that the cost of replacing each of the four color toner cartridges in some of today’s most popular color laser printers will cost more than the price paid to purchase the printer. The purpose of this article isn’t to support or defend the cost the manufacturers charge for these consumables, rather to raise consumer awareness and to inform them about alternative replacement cartridge options.
The printer manufacturers claim that the retail cost of replacement cartridges is not “high” at all, rather “fair”. They back up these claims by stating the costs reflect the billions of dollars spent on the research and development of the science behind the ink and cartridge technologies. The reality is that the “printer consumables” product lines, which includes replacement ink and toner cartridges, are some of the most profitable product lines for printer manufacturers. The cost of printer consumables (ink and toner) has risen due to a very high consumer demand for these cartridges.
