KBA Rapida 185 Prints High-Volume Packaging at Linocraft

On 12 October last year the biggest sheetfed offset press in the Asia-Pacific region launched into action up bang on schedule Linocraft Printers in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, following an installation and commissioning period of just five weeks. The highly automated Rapida 185 six-colour coater press for a sheet size of 130 x 185 cm (51.18 x 72.83in) is the company's second KBA press and joins a five-colour Rapida 105 with coater which was delivered in 2006. The imposing installation underscores KBA pole position in large format, both in Asia and the rest of the world.
The big press has catapulted Linocraft Printers to an even higher print level of print technology in South East Asia. Not only has it cut production and delivery times for existing customers, it has also attracted new accounts.
Linocraft Printers was established in 1972 and has evolved into a full-service print and packaging provider on a soaring growth trajectory. It is associated with shareholders of Malaysia's biggest logistics group, Tiong Nam Logistics Holdings Berhad. While Linocraft's production halls house a number of small-, medium- and large-format presses from other vendors, the Rapida 185 is undoubtedly the flagship, and has enabled the company to expand its already strong position in the high-volume and VLF packaging sectors.
Linocraft managing director and CEO Andrew Tan Woon Chay says: "The Rapida 185 is a logical consequence of our company development and an expression of our satisfaction with KBA. We were looking for attractive, cost-effective technology that would address our packaging production demands one hundred per cent. KBA's specialists provided invaluable support. Originally we had planned to install a Rapida 205, which has an even bigger format of 150 x 205 cm. But in the end the Rapida 185 proved to be more appropriate for our needs. It, too, has enormous growth potential and a number of unique features that distinguish us from our competitors."
Linocraft started out as a printer of books and commercials. In 2000 it expanded into packaging printing, and this has since become its primary business. As Andrew Tan Woon Chay explains: "A few years ago the ratio of commercial to packaging was 80:20, now it is 20:80. Packaging printing has become our biggest product line, and with the high-performance KBA presses we have achieved global standards."
Linocraft's reference list features international brands such as Dyson, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Panasonic, Loreal, Fedex and Sony. Packaging for the food and beverage industries is another growth market, and here Linocraft supplies top names such as Coca Cola, MeadWestvaco and Tiger Beer.

How to fix printers not working in OS X 10.6.8

After OS X 10.6.8 was released last Thursday, a number of people found that their printers were no longer printing, where the system would show the printers in a paused state and no print jobs would work. This problem seems to behave differently for different setups, but overall appears to be a bug with how CUPS handles its backend processes.

Xerox shares down 14 pct this year

Wielding a plastic toll road pass during a recent speech in a Manhattan restaurant, Xerox Chief Executive Ursula Burns was on a mission to prove her company is not just about copy machines anymore. Burns, 52, who was raised in a New York housing project and started her career as an engineering intern at Xerox in 1980, has been charged with bringing a company synonymous with printers and copiers into the digital age. These days, she takes every opportunity to remind investors that half of Xerox Corp's revenue comes from its services business.

Another litter of AirPrint-enabled printers

One of the most anticipated features of iOS 4 was its wireless printing feature, dubbed AirPrint. The service allows users to print directly from iOS devices. AirPrint was supposed to utilize any printers shared by Macs on the same local network as the iOS device. While this feature was cut before release, third party applications do exist to enable it. Despite AirPrint not being as powerful as it once was, HP has not stopped adding new AirPrint printers to the fray.

3D printing creating 'a whole new world'

Not long ago, I asked Scott Summit, a pioneer in using 3D printing in the design of custom prosthetics and an industrial design expert, who he would recommend I look into if I wanted to see the best in the world at using this young technology to make and sell consumer products. His answer, without hesitation? A small company run by Janne Kyttanen in the Dutch capital called Freedom of Creation.

HP Scanjet G2710: fair, general-purpose scanner

The first thing you notice about this mid-range scanner from HP is its design. Far from being a piece of grey plastic office gear, it shows considerable design effort and should be just as at home in a smart study or even a living room, as it would in a trendy office. It was never poor on any test, but there's better scan quality to be had for the same outlay.

HTML5 and JavaScript to render PDFs in Firefox

Mozilla is working on a project that will allow PDF documents to be rendered within the browser using HTML5 and JavaScript as opposed to having to rely on a separate plug-in. Mozilla researcher Dr. Andreas Gal, working on JavaScript and Web research, spills the beans: We have been developing pdf.js in the open (on github.com), albeit quietly, for about a month now. We were waiting on the completion of some major features (Type1 fonts, gradients, etc.) before communicating pdf.js more broadly. We’ve been taken by surprise by the early and intense interest in our work, so we decided to blog and talk about our project earlier than we initially planned.

20,000 Lexmark workgroup printers to be deployed at U.S. VA locations

Lexmark International, Inc recently became the manufacturer of choice for a national workgroup and color laser printer bid sourced by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The contract calls for the potential placement of more than 20,000 Lexmark E, T and C Series workgroup monochrome and color laser printers throughout 260 VA locations, including outpatient clinics in the U.S., within the next 90 to 120 days. The contract is expected to help the VA achieve more than $15 million in savings in relation to standard purchasing costs.
The award is the first national printer bid sourced by the VA. Previously, the VA sourced its printers regionally with awards made independently by each specific Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), Region, or Medical Center.
This national award will help standardize the entire agency with Lexmark, eliminating the challenges associated with deploying, managing and maintaining a multi-vendor fleet of printing devices. The national award also meets the VA's need for workgroup monochrome and color laser printers that align with its strategic goals of reducing costs and environmental impact. The contract also supports the VA's need to ensure the accuracy and completeness of its information resources, reduce the complexity of its IT infrastructure, and optimize the efficiency of its business processes.
The winning VA bid was awarded directly to Alvarez & Associates, LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based information technology and executive management services company. Alvarez & Associates is a Lexmark partner and a 100 percent Service Disabled Veteran Owned /Small Business (SDVO/SB) that provides intellect, analysis, technology and counsel to government agencies.

Heidelberg Issues White Paper on Security Threats Unique to Printers

Heidelberg USA has issued a new white paper focusing on security issues unique to modern printing facilities. Entitled, “24 Ways A Printer Can Avoid Being Hacked,” the white paper views security not as an unnecessary added cost, but as a real competitive advantage printers overlook at their peril.
Security and privacy issues have taken on new urgency in light of stepped-up cyber attacks, virus infestations and network break-ins that target complex IT infrastructures and vital information processes. Unfortunately, back-up and data protection are not always a top priority for printers until job data loss and significant downtime occur, due to accidental data deletion, hardware failure, lost or stolen removable media—even natural disaster. As a result, printers may fail to take appropriate steps to safeguard employee or customer information, or to keep production running smoothly in spite of threats to plant security. The reality, however, is that no individual or company is immune.
“Until the unthinkable happens, printers typically do not see themselves as potential targets for attack,” said Eugene O’Brien, senior technical specialist, Prinect and CtP Services, Heidelberg, USA, author of the white paper. “But as printers provide more and more Internet-based products and services to their customers, every company has a responsibility to evaluate its security risks and determine the best security practices to implement. ‘24 Ways A Printer Can Avoid Being Hacked’ is a practical guide to recognizing common security threats and taking effective measures to reduce or eliminate them.”

HP Receives Favorable Ruling on Inkjet Print Cartridge Patent Infringement

HP announced it has obtained a favorable Initial Determination by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) regarding the importation and sale of patent-infringing inkjet print cartridges. The ITC ruling upholds the validity of HP’s patents in this case, finding MicroJet Technology Co. in violation as a direct infringer of HP’s patents and finding Asia Pacific Microsystems (APM) in violation as a contributory infringer of those patents.
The decision is based on investigations into a complaint filed by HP and instituted by the U.S. ITC on June 21, 2010, alleging violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 in the importation into the United States and sale of HP-compatible inkjet print cartridges that infringe HP patents.

The Printer Specs That Matter

When you're buying a printer, it makes sense to think long-term. Pay attention to issues like the page yield of the cartridges your printer uses and whether it can automatically print on both sides of a sheet of paper. Doing your homework about those specs will make sure that the printer you think is cheap won't cost you an arm and a leg over time.

Xerox Chief Looks Beyond Photocopiers Toward Services

For Xerox Corp. Chief Executive Ursula Burns, the future of the venerable printer and photo-copy machine maker isn't in making copies. Ms. Burns has spent the nearly two years since she took on the CEO role trying transform Xerox into a services-based business, as the rise of digital technology has cut into the company's traditional hardware line. In three years, two-thirds of company revenue will likely come from "services," or contracts to manage other companies' back office operations such as printing, human-resources and other areas of their business, she says.

PDF Expert for iPad 2.5 Makes Signing Documents Paperless

Readdle releases PDF Expert 2.5, a new version of its cutting edge iPad application for editing PDF forms and annotating PDF documents. With PDF Expert 2.5 anyone can sign agreements and contracts with partners or clients right on the iPad. Since many contracts are interactive PDF documents, the new version adds support for signature fields in PDF forms.
Currently used by medical, insurance, manufacturing and realtor companies for their sales staff in the field, PDF Expert 2.5 lets them go paperless even for such important activity as signing agreements. Once signed, the document could be easily submitted to corporate email or web server for further processing.
In PDF Expert 2.5 people can choose between "My Signature" or "Customer Signature" when they sign document. "My Signature" is a regular signature of the sales person that is saved within PDF Expert and can be reused later. On the other hand "Customer Signature" is never saved, making application compliant with regulations in industries like insurance.
As most electronic agreements are PDF forms, PDF Expert 2.5 makes it possible to use special interactive signature fields when designing the document. Simple tap on the signature filed will reveal "My Signature" or "Customer Signature" making it very simple to sign document in any needed place.
"Signing agreements on the iPad is a huge opportunity for many companies that has sales people working in the field," says Alex Tyaguslky, Readdle CMO. "Prior to PDF Expert they needed to prepare agreement in the office, print it, sign with the customer, go back to office, scan it and upload to company server. Now all they need is the iPad with PDF Expert"

Zebra Technologies Introduces Next Generation Mobile Printer for Retail and Healthcare Industries

Zebra Technologies Corporation announced the release of its new QLn mobile printer family. According to research released by VDC in 2011, the mobile worker population exceeded one billion in 2010 and with an increasingly mobile and distributed workforce, is expected to grow by over 10% over the next three years. Zebra addresses this growing workforce with the QLn, the third generation of the QL printer, Zebra’s all-time best selling direct thermal mobile line. “Historically the QL printer line has provided our customers with the productivity and durability required to keep their businesses functioning efficiently”
The QLn builds off of the success of over 700,000 QL printers shipped to date by squarely addressing the primary request made by Zebra’s customers: lower the cost of operation. The QLn does this by including the industry’s first Ethernet connection for mobile printers. By enabling remote status collection and better device management, the printer helps reduce service time and maximizes printer uptime, delivering a greater return-on-investment.
The QLn is also the first printer with Zebra’s new Power Smart Print Technology. This new feature delivers faster processing and throughput with lower power drain, giving mobile workers better quality printing and more uptime on the job. Zebra’s ‘smart battery’ technology on the QLn displays charge and overall battery health, which minimizes downtime due to older, poor-performing batteries that don’t last entire shifts.

Polaroid Grey Label GL10 Instant Mobile Printer

It never occurred to me that one day I'd be reviewing something designed by Lady Gaga, much less that the something would be a printer. But that day and that something are both here, in the form of the Polaroid Grey Label GL10 Instant Mobile Printer ($169.99 direct). How much Lady Gaga, or more precisely Haus of Gaga, actually had to do with the design in her role of Creative Director is unclear, but Polaroid has certainly come up with an intriguing portable photo printer.

3D printers coming to Households Soon?

Printers that can produce three-dimensional objects could become a highly sought-after item in the near future. Rapid fabrication printers have been around for at least two decades and were used for aerospace and car companies, costing millions, according to a report by CNN Money on Monday. Rajeev Kulkarni, the vice president of global engineering at 3D Systems, told CNN that a “printer” that can manufacture a set of keys, a chair, or a shirt has been around for some time now, and estimates that the cheapest ones on the market five years ago ran from $25,000 to $50,000. However, the prices have dropped to around $1,000 to $2,000.

DIY Inkjet Printer Prints On Almost Any Surface

After looking around, a group from University of Washington found that there were no DIY inkjet kits available. Sad times. Parallax used to sell one, and the book Inkjet Applications by Matt Gilliland which went along with it, is no longer in print. So what did University of Washington students Patrick Hannan, Jared Knutzen, Nicholas C Lewis, Joy Markham, and professor M. A. Ganter do? Why, they built their own open inkjet printer for their ME495 (Mechanical Engineering Design) class. The best part is that you can use it to print on all kinds of objects--paper, t-shirts, even mousepads (remember those?).
