With operational costs rising and the pressure to adopt environment friendly practices, businesses are looking for ways to make their daily routines more economically while still contributing to the preservation of mother nature. Technological advancement seems to be the most favored way to adopt this practice nowadays. One great news that is sure to help firms to be more efficient is the launch of Google Fax. E-mailfaxservices proprietor Paolo Parodi says, “The ability to fax from Google will help businesses cut time and costs and help them increase their bottom line.”
Integrated with Gmail, Google's email service, the service enables users to use the same interface for their fax needs; a move that saves time, effort and expenses. When Gmail was introduced years ago, it paved the way for small- and medium-sized businesses to take advantage of the advanced features offered by the service, which includes unlimited storage that was only enjoyed by bigger corporations. The same way is expected with the fax integration service from the Internet giant. With some providers offering free trial services for Google Fax, businesses of all types can take advantage and try if this solution will fit into their business practice or not.
Individual entities who want to make use of the technology can also enjoy the same benefits as those of small- and medium-sized businesses, are sure not to be left, as they can also reap the same advantages offered to small- and mid-sized firms. The way users send and receive fax via Google is the same one to follow in order to send or receive a common e-mail, but in this case faxes are handled as email attachments.
One of the main benefits of integrating this fax technology is that businesses and individuals can acquire a unique fax number, choosing between local and toll-free ones. Although the majority of services offer options for users located in USA, some companies have started expanding the offering of Google faxing to other countries such as Canada and the UK.

DIWire Bender wire printer blends 2D, 3D shapes
We love 3D printers here at Crave, but one small problem exists with the devices: They traditionally can't print sturdy thin lines. 3D printers use a layering process based on slices printed thinly and bonded together, which works well for voluminous objects, but not necessarily thin ones. The DIWire Bender, created by New York design firm Pensa, works as a DIY wire printer that bridges the gap between 3D printers and commercial computer numerical control (CNC) wire benders. To create shapes, wire from a spool feeds into the DIwire, passes through several wheels for straightening, and leads to the three-dimensional head that bends wire as instructed.

RepRap 3D Printers Will Soon Self-Replicate
3D printers are awesome. There’s a catch, though: The printers are nowhere near inexpensive enough for most people to just pick one up. We’ve seen some cheap ones like the Printrbot, but that will still run you up $500. What if you could get one for free, though? Ken, a student at Virginia Commonwealth University, wants to help you get one on the cheap. He wants to use an open-source 3D printer called the RepRap (Replicating Rapid Prototyper) to print the parts for other identical machines--thus, more 3D printers. He can’t afford one right now, so he started a Kickstarter to help get the money to make one.

A Portable Scanner for Smartphones
Using your smartphone to take a photo of a document is one of those things that seems like it should be easy, but just isn’t. First you have to futz with the angle and the distance. Then there’s the flash: on, it’s too bright and washed out; off, it’s dark and blurry. The Scanbox, designed by Phil Bosua, Ben Hillier, and Luke Allen, is an elegant solution to a simple but persistently frustrating problem. On his Kickstarter page, Bosua calls the Scanbox a scanner for your phone, but it’s really more of a tripod. Made of laminated card stock (in your choice of 6 different colors) with magnets to hold it together, it’s designed to fold flat for transport, or to stash out of the way in a file cabinet.

Waste Not: Refillable Printer Ink From Silo
Like everyone else, I’m always looking to save a buck and accordingly shopped around for refillable-ink cartridge alternatives, despite the stern warnings
from Canon (and other printer manufacturers) which claim I’d cause irreversible
damage to the printer by using anything other than its branded ink. There was a
time the major office supply chains carried generic ink replacements, but thanks
to some legal shenanigans, they now only serve name brands. You can still find
cartridge refill and recycling services on the web, but the quality, depending
on your printer, is untested and varies widely.

The Paperless Office Inches Closer with Amazon Send to Kindle for Mac
Amazon is helping to bring the mythical "paperless office" a bit closer, if only by a tiny fraction. The new Send to Kindle for Mac app lets Mac fans join PC users to bypass the printer altogether and "print" documents directly to their Kindle. The question is, what's taking the other e-book providers so long to deliver similar functions? Can we get a little more movement here, please?

Vodafone to go ‘paperless’ with move to Skyparks
The ‘paperless office’, once a slogan to describe the office of the future, is now the tangible step forward for Vodafone Malta as it prepares to move into Malta International Airport’s Skyparks business centre. All printing will be centralised in two rooms per floor and documents will only be printed if the employee physically goes to the printer with a code. Default printing will be always duplex and a printing record per employee will be in place with a percentage target reduction per team.

Small business inkjets: how fast is ink?
There has always been a sizeable gap between inkjet and laser printers in terms of both speed and quality. Laser printers were always faster and inkjets always had superior print quality. While we've been able to depend on these age-old truisms for a long time, things have become less black-and-white in recent years. Inkjets have become faster, and laser printers are able to produce much higher-quality photo and colour prints. The price difference between the two types has also decreased through the years. The cheapest laser all-in-one in this test costs about as much as the most expensive inkjet all-in-one.

Java-based PDF Studio 7.4 Pro has a non-standard user interface
Qoppa’s PDF Studio 7 Pro is a Java-based PDF creation and manipulation tool that runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux computers. While it’s not particularly beautiful to look at and doesn’t conform to anything that would be considered standard Macintosh UI design, it does offer a useful collection of features that allow you to easily create and manipulate PDF files.
PDF Studio 7 Pro offers up a pretty standard set of PDF editing features. Using the app you can combine or split PDF documents, add annotations, text, images, sounds or even other files to your documents. A signature tool lets you create a digital signature that contains an SSL certificate, an image of your actual signature, and which can’t be applied to the document unless you provide a password.

Albany's Solano Copy Center closing its doors
After 24 years in business, the Solano Copy Center at 1185
Solano Ave. in Albany will shut its doors Thursday. The store is not your typical copy center. Sure, it has the usual copiers and
fax machines. But it also specializes in copying video tapes and home movies as
well as vinyl records into digital files. The shop has been a labor of love for owner Louie Jauregui and his daughter
Anna Navarro. But Jauregui is 74 and ready to retire. "I didn't want to wait until I died or went broke," Jauregui said. "There's
four ways to retire -- you're broke, you're in debt, you're sick or you're
dead."

Warm dryer gives you more ink milage
We’ve all been there: After staying up all night to work on a report or term paper, you discover that you’re out of ink. No! How to do it: Remove the cartridges and run the warm dryer on the spot where the ink comes out for 2 to 3 minutes. Try printing again while the cartridge is still warm. The hair dryer heats the ink and helps it flow through the cartridge’s tiny nozzles.

Warren County changing its printer-copier contract
The Warren County Support Services Committee approved a switch in the way the county buys and maintains printers and copiers for county offices in a move that could save more than $500,000 over the next 10 years. The county will do away with the 347 copiers and printers that have accumulated over the years, many of them leased, in favor of a secure system of 123 devices that will be paid for in a “managed print services” contract, under which the county will pay per page for printed and copied documents.

Caskey Group Awarded G7 Master Printer Qualification
Caskey Group announced it has been awarded its G7 Master Printer Qualification from IDEAlliance (International Digital Enterprise Alliance). The G7 Master Printer Qualification recognizes Caskey’s process controls to provide accurate, consistent color matching throughout the printing process – proof to print. There are currently 809 G7 Master Printers worldwide.
Printing clients benefit from using G7 Master Printers. The tight printing controls assure that projects printed at various times and across geographic regions will look remarkably similar. This helps support clients’ branding standards and professionalism in their presentations.
Without G7 standards in place, the printing industry standard is to match “pleasing color” as defined by the client or press operator. Because “pleasing color” may vary from person to person, G7 standards are critical to ensure consistency.

Questions raised about the amount of hydrophobic foam inside the cartridges
Imagine one person's surprise to discover that HP has apparently been selling its customers printer cartridges with less ink than previous models. In a post on an HP Printer Cartridges blog, user "adminsky" opened two of the same HP inkjet cartridges from different manufacturing years—one dated January 2010, and the second 2012. What he discovered was a smaller piece of hydrophobic foam inside the newer cartridge, a supposed sign that cartridges were being manufactured with less ink than what people had paid for in the past. Just to be sure, he also opened a third, different cartridge, also manufactured this year, and found an even smaller piece of foam.

Printing 3-D objects at home isn't the future. It's now
Imagine buying a coffee mug online and instead of waiting for it to arrive in the mail, just input the specs into a 3-Dimensional printer and wait for your fully-formed mug to finish. It’s not science fiction. It’s now. “The big impediment right now is that coffee mugs can’t be made out of plastic,” said Phil Renato, professor of metals and jewelry design at Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids.

Foxit Launches Embedded PDF Software Development Kit 2.0
Foxit Corporation, a leading provider of solutions for reading, editing, creating, organizing, and securing PDF documents, today announced the release of the Foxit Embedded PDF Software Development Kit (SDK) 2.0. The new release provides additional support for PDF forms, annotations, pressure sensitive ink, digital signatures, and added security. Foxit Embedded PDF SDK 2.0 also supports developers targeting Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview.
The industry leading SDK is targeted to developers, device manufacturers, and telecom carriers who support applications that leverage powerful, standard-compliant PDF technology to securely display, search, and annotate documents and to fill PDF forms. For example, HTC uses this technology to provide PDF view capabilities on their popular HTC ONE series smartphones. The Embedded PDF SDK is platform independent, allowing developers to "develop once, port many times" to quickly and cost effectively extend the reach of their software to multiple platforms. Optimized for mobile devices, desktop, and server deployments, this SDK provides scalable, robust, and high performance PDF technology. Demos and sample code are provided to help developers get up to speed quickly.
Key new features of the Foxit Embedded PDF SDK 2.0 include:
PDF Form Filling and Data Collection PDF forms allow authors to create digital forms using standard PDF technology so these forms can be viewed, read, and filled-in through freely available PDF readers and internet browsers. Data from these forms can be captured and stored in repositories. The Embedded PDF SDK PDF Forms module allows developers to display PDF forms on mobile devices for their users to fill out. Support for JavaScript allows developers to validate data and to submit the collected data to a back end repository.
Annotations Annotations allow users to write comments, highlights, and other explanatory notes on documents. The Foxit Embedded PDF SDK Annotation module allows developers to save user annotations as part of the PDF as opposed to an application layer overlay. This allows the annotations to be shared and viewed on other applications (including PDF readers) and on other platforms. Annotations include file attachments, stamps, highlights, notes, and hyper-links.
Pressure Sensitive Digital Ink Digital ink enables users to write directly on the screen to control their application and to input information which appears as natural-looking handwriting or drawings. Pressure sensitive digital ink provides a more natural inking experience that allows users to write and draw just as they would with pen on paper. Users are able to finely control the appearance of their annotations, such as thickness, color, opacity, and texture. The Foxit Embedded PDF SDK Pressure Sensitive Digital Ink module allows developers to incorporate pressure sensitive digital ink capabilities into their PDF solution.

Saxon scientists make 'printable speaker'
Chunky, space-stealing speakers could become a thing of the past, thanks to scientists in eastern Germany who have made the world’s first printable speaker. Paper-thin, they promise to make noise in the tech world and beyond. A team from the Institute for Print and Media Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology, Saxony, had been working on the project for just two and a half years when they managed to make a successful prototype. It involves printing layers of polymers and conductive chemicals onto a single piece of paper to create a speaker.

Ink-onomics
The first law of ink-onomics: The cheaper the printer, the more expensive its inks. We’ve tracked the prices of 56 inkjet MFPs over the past two years, and the average cost per page for inks destined for a cheap printer (which we define as one costing less than $200) has consistently been higher than that for an expensive printer (one costing $200 or more).

ISME lashes out at 'intelligent' printers
A body representing Irish businesses has criticised the introduction of a new generation of "intelligent" printers which maximise usage profits for the manufacturer to the detriment of the user, labelling their deployment as being "anti competitive". The intelligent "chipped" printers and copiers which have recently been brought to market by well-known manufacturers like Hewlett Packard, Lexmark and Epsom are designed specifically to prevent users refilling cartridges, a factor which will cost companies €1,000 more per year per 10 employees according to a print specialist. This amounts to €5,000 for a staff of 50 or €10,000 for 100 users.

Ultra-Portable Scanning
It’s slightly thicker than a Sharpie and maybe twice as long (9.3″), but it can
scan a letter-sized sheet of paper in about 4 seconds, at up to 600dpi in full
color. It’s battery operated, and the Micro SD slot can handle cards up to 32GB
(though you’ll need to provide your own). Once you’ve scanned things, you just
plug the scanner into your computer with the included USB cable, and download
images from there.

Fax Incentive Program Offered By Quadrant Software
Backing up its launch of fax over IP (FoIP) software last month, Quadrant Software has introduced a Quadrant FastFax customer trade-up program that provides a path for companies to migrate from its existing hardware/software combination to QuadraDocV virtual FoIP software. Companies that are staying with the traditional fax hardware setup will find a trade-in discount program as well. The benefit of moving from hardware-based fax is the elimination of hardware management and maintenance and the canceling of subscriptions for analog phone lines. FoIP software runs within a VMware virtual machine. It provides the same fax capabilities as Quadrant's hardware-based products.
